Professor Chong Fah Hing has been a pioneering figure in Chinese diaspora studies, particularly in literary and cultural history. Despite the challenges along his academic trajectory, several pivotal moments in his career merit deeper scholarly attention. Building on insights from Show Yin Xing and Goh Siew Poh’s study, “Practicing Cross-Boundary Subjectivity: A Preliminary Discussion of Chuang Hua-hsing’s Mahua Literary Discourse and Translation,” this article argues that Chong’s scholarly research, translation practice, and social commentary collectively advance cross-linguistic and cross-cultural inquiry, while reshaping the discourse on “Mahua–Huama” relations. His interventions further reflect critical and original perspectives on social ethnicity, education, and intellectual culture. This paper seeks to delineate the contours of Chong Fah Hing’s academic, translational, and critical practices, thereby illuminating the anxieties, responsibilities, and praxis of a contemporary Mahua intellectual.
