When Pacific war broke out, not only he was forced to face the fall of his country and deaths of his bosom friends, but also inevitable discontinuity of his studies and great emotional catastrophe. Although war had brought him partings, Seow was left with no option but to move on. Similar to how Seow’s poems emphasized heavily on personal affairs instead of the public’s, this chronology focuses on the details of daily life during war time, therefore may seem lacking in traits of typical anti-war literatures. Seow’s poems have shown great interests on questioning human’s nature, alluding to present time’s issues with anecdotes of the past. The publication of Drafts of the Unstartling Words in such era; not only it is Seow’s last classical poetry publication in China mainland, but also marks the end of such poetry tradition. It was only the beginning of a dreary and ill-fated destiny. The history-changing event of 1949 brought him both political and cultural crisis, leaving him an destined dystopia. Due to his journey through Hong Kong and Malay Peninsula, Seow’s poetry vision had since relocated towards a farther and distant observation, with less enthusiasm and more pondering thoughts.

Keywords: Seow Yeoh Thian, chronicle, Teowchew, Hong Kong
}, number={2}, journal={ERUDITE: Journal of Chinese Studies and Education}, author={Bee Fu, Th’ng}, year={2020}, month={Dec.}, pages={141–185} }
