Abstract

The purpose of this papers is to share a personal philosophy about doing research, that is the ‘4r 2s’ approach to research as a catalyst for change and continuous improvement for professional development. I view research as a small ‘r’. Research is the small ‘r’ when it is made an integral part of my practice and routinized in my teaching. Research, specifically action research, becomes enquiry and learning in classroom practice because it is relevant, reflective, realistic, and revelatory, and carried out within an environment of sharing - collaboration and the exchange values of research - and support through collegiality and networking. I reflected on my research endeavors and elicited the evolvement of my journey as teacher and researcher and the way I attempted to understand myself, my students, the school context and new practices in order to improve my teaching. I hope to persuade my readers that in incorporating the ‘4r 2s’elements in the practice, a research presence could permeate the whole school culture that would enhance staff professionalism. Employing research in this way also exemplifies lifelong learning - we continually develop our intellectual and professional character.
