Abstract

The colour of rivers comes from the dissolved and suspended materials known as suspended sediment such as debris. Suspended sediment is important in determining water quality. Bernam river is located at the south of Perak and northeastern part of Selangor in Malaysia. Nowadays, it is at risk due to changes in land use in the upper catchments and surrounding activities that feed the catchments with eroded materials into the rivers. The objectives of this study are to determine the suspended sediment concentration as well as the sediment rating curve of Bernam and Inki rivers. Sampling was conducted once a week for streamflow and overflow from October 2017 to January 2018. Suspended sediment concentration was determined by filtration using 0.45-μm Whatman GFC filter paper. Results show that the highest sediment concentration was 730.76 mg/L at Bernam river. Meanwhile, the sediment rating curve of Bernam River were R2=0.86 for high-flow and R2=0.5 for low-flow sampling. The highest sediment concentration was recorded in December due to high amount of rainfall. The findings from the study show that changes in land use around Bernam River and Inki River affect the sediment concentration. The sources of the suspended sediment are from plantations, agricultural areas and settlements, thus influencing the suspended sediment concentration.
