Abstract

In the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning, integrating character education is crucial. Character education in EFL contexts promotes ethical communication, cross-cultural understanding, and collaborative learning, which are essential for students in a globalized world. This study aims to delve deeper into the needs of senior high school students regarding character education (CE) within the context of their English learning materials and online learning resources. This mixed-method research employs both quantitative and descriptive approaches to provide a comprehensive analysis. The study includes 326 participants from senior high schools in Yogyakarta that have adopted the Independent Curriculum (Kurikulum Merdeka). The methodology follows the MEASURE approach, focusing on the validation and reliability of the survey instrument. The quantitative data analysis includes Cronbach’s Alpha and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) to ensure the instrument’s validity and reliability. The qualitative aspect involves in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to explore further into the students’ needs. The findings reveal specific needs and preferences that can guide the development of tailored educational resources, ensuring they are culturally relevant, engaging, and supportive of character education goals. This study provides valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers, highlighting the importance of integrating character education principles into academic content.
