https://ejournal.upsi.edu.my/index.php/PERS/article/view/10006

The 14th General Election (GE) showed Pakatan Harapan (PH) for the first time in the history of elections to form an administration in Perak. Changes in the results of this general election are certainly influenced by the tendency of voters to vote for parties or candidates who are able to benefit the community. In terms of electoral geography, the Manjoi and Behrang state assembly consists of urban, semi-urban and rural areas that have 18 and 20 voting district centers respectively. This area consists of ethnic Malays, Chinese, Indians and others. Thus, this study analyzes the tendencies of voters during the 14th GE in Manjoi and Behrang State Assembly by using the framework of rational choice theory to evaluate the factors related to respondents' choices. In order to achieve the objective of the study, a quantitative approach using questionnaire instruments was distributed face-to-face to a total of 450 voters in the area. Secondary sources are also used to support the findings. Quantitative data was analyzed descriptively using SPSS software in tabular form. The results of the study found that the voter's choice of party, economic and candidate factors was significant to the change in the election results in Manjoi and Behrang. Candidate choice is seen as dominant in influencing voter decisions during the 14th GE. It is clear that the respondents in Manjoi and Behrang have given the opportunity and chosen candidates who are believed to be able to improve local development to a better level than the administration before the 14th GE.
Nurul Wahida IsmailSiti Noranizahhafizah Boyman

https://ejournal.upsi.edu.my/index.php/PERS/article/view/10014

Community development is a process that requires comprehensive action. One of the concepts focused on is community capacity building, which has various dimensions. In Malaysia, the study of community development, especially when linked to the community of disabled people (KOKU), still has a lot of room for exploration. The study specifically aims at the concept of community capacity building, which has not yet been comprehensively studied, especially for the community of people with physical disabilities (KOKUF). For KOKUF who have gained exposure through skills programs, the selection of certain dimensions of community capacity building is the best way to assess the extent of community development that has occurred among these communities. Therefore, appropriate and accurate dimensions are important so that the study of KOKUF achieves its true purpose in evaluating the process and results of community capacity building. Five main dimensions are focused on in the process and results of KOKUF capacity building. The first dimension is learning opportunities and skill development, which includes identifying knowledge gaps and providing opportunities for skill improvement. The second dimension is resource mobilization, referring to KOKUF's ability to identify and access internal and external resources such as community members, external parties, time, funds, and facilities to improve KOKUF's capabilities. The third dimension is partnership, relationship, and network, which emphasizes KOKUF's interaction with fellow community members and external parties based on collaboration, strengthening bonds, and building confidence to improve KOKUF's capabilities. The fourth dimension is the asset-based approach, focusing on the knowledge, skills, and talents possessed by KOKUF, with an assessment of how these assets benefit and improve KOKUF's life. The final dimension is community feeling, which evaluates the positive perceptions among members regarding trust and cooperation, reflecting their willingness to act together for the well-being of the community.
Muhammad Nadzir IbrahimNobaya AhmadAmna Md NoorMohd. https://ejournal.upsi.edu.my/index.php/PERS/article/view/9919

This study examines the lexical choice of English by Malay Gen Z speakers at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) in the domain of clothing, using pragmatic analysis based on Sperber and Wilson's (1985) Relevance Theory (RT). The study aims to understand why and how Malay Gen Z students choose between British English and American English, with the main issue being the generation's tendency towards American English that is influenced by Western entertainment culture. The study employs a qualitative approach with text analysis, using a lexical corpus from Algeo's (2006) "British or American English?: A Handbook of Word and Grammar Patterns." The data involves the selection of five types of clothing: jumper or sweater, trousers or pants, trainers or sneakers, waistcoat or vest, and nappy or diaper, involving 100 Malay Gen Z informants (50 males and 50 females) selected using purposive sampling. Findings indicate that Malay Gen Z speakers tend to prefer American English lexical items over British English in the context of clothing. For example, "sweater" was chosen by 74 informants compared to "jumper" chosen by 22 informants, while "pants" was chosen by 91 informants compared to "trousers" chosen by 3 informants. According to RT, this choice reflects lower cognitive effort and higher contextual relevance, with American media playing a significant role in shaping lexical preferences. In conclusion, understanding the dynamics of language and pragmatics among Malay Gen Z students is crucial for developing more relevant and effective English teaching strategies at the higher education level.
Noorsaiyidah SuradiMuhammad Zaid Daud

https://ejournal.upsi.edu.my/index.php/PERS/article/view/9130

The transformation of higher education in Malaysia has become a central focus in addressing the challenges and opportunities brought by the Fourth Industrial Revolution. In an effort to enhance the education system, various strategies have been introduced to ensure the efficiency and competitiveness of the nation’s higher education institutions. One of the key challenges is the need to align the curriculum with the rapidly changing demands of the labor market. The Fourth Industrial Revolution has significantly reshaped the skills required for the workforce, with a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data analytic, and related technologies. Therefore, improvements in higher education are crucial to ensuring that graduates are equipped to thrive in an increasingly complex and advanced environment. Nevertheless, this transformation also presents vast opportunities for innovation and growth. Higher education must become a driving force for change, producing a workforce that is globally competitive and of high quality. Empowering students with technological and entrepreneurial skills is essential to ensuring that graduates not only meet market demands but also create new job opportunities. Additionally, the integration of technology into teaching and learning processes is a critical component of this transformation. Student-centered learning approaches, utilizing digital platforms and interactive learning tools, will provide a more dynamic and competitive learning experience. This transformation also requires adequate infrastructure and support to ensure the effective use of technology in education.
Shahidah Hamzah

https://ejournal.upsi.edu.my/index.php/PERS/article/view/9725

In the current uncertain and highly challenging economic climate, students are among the groups that are most affected. The rising cost of living among students not only presents challenges in their academic pursuits but also raises concerns about their daily expenses necessary to continue their studies at the higher education level. Therefore, a study was conducted involving students from the Faculty of Human Sciences, Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI), to identify the sources of financial support and spending patterns of students, as well as to examine the impact of the cost of living on students' academic performance. This study employed a quantitative method through the distribution of a Google Form link. The study respondents consisted of 312 active students from the Faculty of Human Sciences, UPSI. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 28.0, including frequency and descriptive analysis. The findings revealed that the majority of students rely on educational loans as their financial source, and most of their expenses are allocated towards food, accommodation, transportation and tuition fees. The study also found that the impact of the cost of living on academic performance was minimal. These findings indicate that while students indeed require a substantial amount of financial resources to continue their studies, managing their expenses wisely can reduce the negative impact of living costs on their academic performance.
Siti Norashikin Abdul LatifNurzaimah Asalal

https://ejournal.upsi.edu.my/index.php/PERS/article/view/10094

The issue of climate change has implications on Small and Medium Industries (SMEs), especially the cracker industry that uses natural and traditional methods to produce products. Crackers are a popular type of snack food in Malaysia and ASEAN countries. The production of crackers traditionally requires suitable weather and temperature conditions. The weather in a place is influenced by several meteorological components, namely temperature, wind direction and speed, rate and type of precipitation and duration of sunlight. This study was conducted to see to what extent weather changes the impact on the cracker industry. Qualitative methods were used to obtain data and information through observation, interview and content analysis methods. A total of 14 informants were selected, consisting of four entrepreneurs, six workers, and four raw material suppliers. The study findings found that the cracker produced depends on local weather conditions and the quality of raw materials. The implication is that the cracker produced is of poor quality and is less in demand from consumers. The marketing of crackers affects the source of income for industry owners and workers. MARA, AIM and TEKUN agencies provide loans and financial resources to small industries to help expand their products in the market. Therefore, the issue of climate change must be addressed because this issue is a barrier to the industry from producing traditional products.
Anis Aliza AzmyRahimah Wahid

https://ejournal.upsi.edu.my/index.php/PERS/article/view/10359

Social support is a critical factor in helping older adults prevent diseases and reduce health risks as they age. The connection between social networks and health outcomes highlights the importance of understanding how various sources of support contribute to disease prevention, particularly with the growing prevalence of chronic health conditions among older adults. This study aims to examine both informal and formal sources of social support in mitigating health risks among Malaysian older adults. Using a qualitative case study approach, 24 older adults from Pusat Aktiviti Warga Emas (PAWE), an activity centre for older adults, were interviewed to gain detailed insights into their experiences. The study findings were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed that family serves as the primary support system, providing emotional and practical assistance essential for health maintenance. Additionally, friends, neighbours, community organizations and government initiatives play complementary roles by offering social interaction, mutual aid and access to healthcare resources. These diverse support systems collectively enhance disease prevention efforts by promoting healthier lifestyles and mitigating health risks. The findings emphasize the need to strengthen these social networks to improve disease prevention efforts and enhance the quality of life for older Malaysians. Future research should explore the most effective forms of social support in promoting health and investigate the potential of digital platforms in broadening access to support, given their growing importance in this digital age.
Faizah Hanim ZainuddinAbdul MuneemSiti Munirah Mohd Faizal LimNurul Aini MehatShah Rizul Izyan Zulkiply
