Author Guidelines

The following is the description of types of acceptable manuscript to Evaluation Studies in Social Sciences (ESSS) journal. ESSS welcomes original articles, reviews, book reviews, software tutorials, dataset reporting, case reports, and brie essays.

Original Articles:

These are detailed studies reporting original research and are classified as primary literature. They include background, literature review, research objective, hypothesis, methods, results, interpretation of findings, and a discussion of possible implications. The word limit for original research article is 6000 words.

Reviews:

Review articles provides a critical and constructive analysis of existing published literature in a field, through summary, analysis, and comparison, often identifying specific gaps or problems and providing recommendations for future research.  The review articles can be of literature reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses. Review articles should include an abstract, introduction, method, result and discussion. Authors are suggested to follow PRISMA checklist as a guide in reporting a review. The acceptable length of reviews are between 4000 – 8000 words long.

Book reviews:

Book reviews are aimed to provide insight and opinion on recently published scholarly books. It is relatively short articles that allow scholars to stay abreast of new literature in the field. The book review should include an abstract, introduction, brief discussion of the pros and cons of the book and conclusion. The book review may total up to 1000 words.

Tutorials:

Tutorial articles provides novel and original insight and reflection on the use of one or several methods of research analysis, or software in accessible format that can be used for guided or self-instruction. The format for a tutorial paper is the similar as a research paper. The recommended length of the article is 2000 words.

Case reports:

Case reports should make a contribution to behavioral knowledge and must have educational value or highlight the need for a change in clinical practice or diagnostic/prognostic approaches. Reports on topics that have already been well described or where similar, cases have already been published. Case reports describing effectiveness of a preventive or therapeutic interventions are not encouraged as these generally require stronger evidence. The acceptable length for a case report is 1000 words.

Case reports format

A case report is required to an abstract, keywords, background, case presentation, discussion, and a conclusion. Following is the description of each of the sections.

Abstract

The abstract should not exceed 150 words. It should include the background of the case, a brief description of the participant’s demographic details, intervention, and outcome. Conclude the abstract with a summary of the implications of the case report.

Keywords

3-5 words

Background

This section should explain the background of the case report or study. The background section should also briefly report the aim of the case report and a summary of the existing literature.

Case presentation

The case presentation includes a description of the participant’s relevant demographic details, treatment or intervention, outcomes, and any other significant details.

Discussion and conclusions

This section includes a description of the findings from the case reports and the relevance to existing literature. The conclusion should include the implication of the case report and recommendations for future researchers.

Dataset

Dataset reports should describe datasets likely to be of broad utility. The report should provide the purpose and variables comprising the dataset. It is recommended to include the objective of the steps for data extraction, sampling, sampling weights and other dataset related information in the report. Authors are welcomed to provide suggestive use of the dataset

Dataset format

Dataset document should include an abstract, data summary, and data description sections. Following is the description of each section.

Abstract

The abstract should be between 50 to 100 words. This section should include a brief description of the dataset and its usability to the public.

Data summary

The data summary section presents an overview of the data set. Authors are required to present the purpose of the collected data set, and a brief description of funded or unfunded research projects that are the source of the data set. Besides, authors should explain the sampling design used for the data collection to assist potential users in selecting compatible statistical analyses. The authors are encouraged to list the publications based on the dataset that was already published. Optionally, the author could include the potential benefits and recommendations for further analysis of the dataset.

Data description

This section should provide a concise description of the dataset. The authors are required to briefly describe the format and the content of each column in the data table. The authors are encouraged to present the variable description in a tabular format as shown in Table 1. The authors should strictly avoid sharing or publishing any identifying information of the participants. Dataset involving human subjects, materials are required to provide evidence of ethical approvals. Finally, the authors need to explain how to access the dataset.
