The Flora Importance Value Index of the Green Belt in the Sultan Azlan Shah Campus, Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris

Abstract

The Sultan Azlan Shah Campus (KSAS), UPSI is located at the foothill of the Main Range which harbours high diversity of trees. This study is executed with the strip-width transect technique, namely using the setting up of three transect lines of 300 metres and 15 subplots of 4,500m2 total area. The results showed that 868 individual trees that comprised 13 families, 23 genus and 53 species were found and recorded. The results also demonstrated that the most important value index at family level was Myrtaceae (53.46%), while the most important genus value index was Syzygium (44.46%), and at the species level was dominated by Ploiarium alternifolium (24.23%). The result suggested that the secondary forest of the KSAS green belt still consists of high diversity of tree flora. Therefore, the conservation and preservation efforts should be carried out to maintain the green belts as the forest of knowledge and pool of biological diversity of the future.
