The Usage of Universal Soil Loss Equation in Estimating the Soil Erosion in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris: A Case Study of Sultan Azlan Shah Campus, Proton City
Keywords:

This study was conducted to evaluate the influence of slope length and gradient in affecting soil erosion rates that occurs in Sultan Azlan Shah Campus (KSAS), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Proton City. There were two plots developed with different degrees of gradient and length. The results showed that the control plot (CP) recorded the highest rate of soil loss of 516.60 tonnes/hectare/year compared to the erosion plot (EP) of 89.78 tonnes/hectare/year. Throughout 15 months of field observation from January 2015 to March 2016, CP recorded a sediment weight of 2,953.55kg and EP of 3676.63kg. While the surface runoff recorded in CP was 14,523 litres and 18,389 litres for EP. Based on the standards set by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the CP and EP are in a very bad classification of soil loss and very high potential for soil erosion. Based on the findings of this study, sustainable protection and development need to be applied to avoid increasing costs in managing slope and soil erosion control.
