Abstract

Clean water is a very important need for humans. The rate of population growth and the increase in residential areas certainly have implications for the provision of clean water supply. In rural areas, especially in the state of Sabah, gravity water are used to obtain clean water sources for daily use by residents. Before this gravity water supply was built, residents got their water supply from wells or springs that had been dug to get water supply. However, residents often face water supply problems, especially during the drought season. Therefore, the residents of Kampung Narayat in Tambunan Sabah took the initiative to build a gravity water pipe for the daily use of the residents there. This article will discuss the residents' perception of the construction of gravity water supply and assess the actions and steps taken by local residents to ensure that these gravity water pipes continue to be well maintained and sustainable. This study uses a quantitative approach that is using a questionnaire. Respondents were selected using a simple random sampling method. A total of 100 residents of Kampung Narayat, Tambunan, Sabah were selected as respondents. This study found that residents often experience water supply disruptions due to damage to the gravity water supply due to floods and landslides. This situation certainly affects the residents involved.  Residents have also taken their own initiative such as fundraising, the implementation of a shift system and duty schedule to ensure that this gravity water supply is preserved.  This study is important to provide information related to issues and problems of clean water supply that are often faced by the residents involved.  It is hoped that this study can also open the eyes of those responsible and take immediate actions to supply clean and sufficient water sources for the needs of the population, especially in rural areas.
