Abstract

Rounding skill is one of the basic skills in numerical concepts which are taught since Year 1 using double digit numbers being rounded to the nearest tenth. The aim of this research was to identify the effectiveness of the use of teaching aid KOBUNA towards primary pupils’ rounding skill. This research utilised an action research design which applied the Kemmis & McTaggart (1988) model. 31 Year 1 pupils in a primary school in Keramat Zone, Kuala Lumpur participated in this study. The research instruments used for this research were the pre and post test sets as well as interview to identify the before and after effectiveness of the use of KOBUNA in rounding skill learning. Research findings showed that there was a huge number of pupils who had not achieved minimal level in the pre test however all of the students had achieved more than minimal level in the post test. There was a significant difference between pre and post test scores after using KOBUNA for rounding skill. Through the interview, the pupils expressed their excitement and interest in using KOBUNA in future lessons. KOBUNA use was found to be useful in improving primary school pupils’ mastery in rounding. This use of KOBUNA can be improved by using greater numerical digits and rounding place values to ensure an extensive use for other pupils at a higher level.
