The Role of Thirukkural in Developing Ethical Individuals Through Social Service Learning Among Primary School Students

Abstract

இந்த ஆய்வு தொடக்கப்பள்ளி மாணவர்களிடையே நன்னெறிப் பண்பை உருவாக்குவதில் திருக்குறளின் பங்கினை ஆராய்வதை நோக்கமாகக் கொண்டுள்ளது. திருக்குறள் என்பது காலங்காலமாகப் பொருத்தமான உலகளாவிய நெறிமுறைகள் மற்றும் நன்னெறிப் பண்புகள் நிறைந்த ஒரு செவ்வியல் தமிழ் இலக்கியமாகும். இந்த ஆய்வு நேர்காணல், உற்றறிதல் மற்றும் குறிப்பேடு பகுப்பாய்வு முறைகள் மூலம் தரவுகள் சேகரிக்கப்பட்டது. இந்த ஆய்வில் பத்து மாணவர்கள் ஈடுபட்டனர். ஆய்வின் முடிவுகள், திருக்குறளைக் கற்பிப்பதன் வழி மாணவர்களிடையே சுறுசுறுப்பு, பொறுப்புணர்வு, நேர மேலாண்மை, மரியாதை செலுத்துதல் மற்றும் பிறர்நிலை உணர்தல் (empathy) போன்ற நன்னெறிப் பண்புகளை உருவாக்க உதவுகின்றது என்பதைக் காட்டுகின்றன. மேலும், சமூகச் சேவை கற்றல் அணுகுமுறையைப் பயன்படுத்துவது, கூட்டுப்பணி, சமூக ஒத்துழைப்பு, சமூக உதவி மற்றும் சுற்றுச்சூழல் பாதுகாப்பு போன்ற சமூக நடவடிக்கைகளில் நேரடியாக ஈடுபடுவதன் மூலம் குறள்களின் பொருளை மாணவர்கள் ஆழமாகப் புரிந்துகொள்ள உதவுகிறது. இது மாணவர்கள் தாங்கள் கற்ற நன்னெறிப் பண்புகளை அன்றாட வாழ்க்கைச் சூழலில் செயல்படுத்தவும் வழிவகுக்கிறது. தொடக்கப்பள்ளிகளில் நன்னெறிக் கல்வியை வலுப்படுத்த, சமூகச் சேவை கற்றல் கூறுகளுடன் பாடத்திட்டத்தில் திருக்குறளை முறையாக ஒருங்கிணைக்க இந்த ஆய்வு பரிந்துரைக்கிறது.

This study aims to examine the role of Thirukkural in developing ethical values among primary school students. Thirukkural is a classical Tamil literary work containing timeless and universally applicable moral principles and ethical virtues. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observation, and journal analysis. Ten students participated in this study. The findings indicate that teaching Thirukkural helps to cultivate ethical attributes such as diligence, responsibility, time management, respect, and empathy among students. Furthermore, the application of the service learning approach — through direct participation in social activities including cooperative work, community collaboration, community assistance, and environmental conservation — enables students to develop a deeper understanding of the couplets' meanings. This approach also guides students to apply the ethical values they have learned within everyday life contexts. The study recommends the systematic integration of Thirukkural into the curriculum, alongside service learning components, in order to strengthen moral education in primary schools.
