The Need for Clothing Fashion Design Competency (Cfadc) as A Requirement in The Fashion Industry

Abstract

This study aims to survey the Clothing Fashion Design Competency (CFaDC) needs so that graduates are able to position themselves in the fashion industry. This qualitative research adopted the method of focused group interviews on 16 instructors who were divided into two groups. All the respondents are teaching in the field of Clothing Fashion Design (CFaD) in Institut Latihan Kemahiran (Skills Training Institutes – STI) in Malaysia. Majority of the respondents believe that the most important competencies are entrepreneurial skills, knowledge on design and knowledge on textile evaluation. Respondents also viewed that the often occuring changes in programs pose obstacles to them in applying part of their competency that is most needed in the industry. Most of these knowledge competencies are applied informally during teaching and learning depending on the suitability of their time. Therefore, parties involved in formulating policies and developing curriculum should accordingly conduct a complete research on the programs that have been implemented before making any changes to them. This is to enable recognizing and identification of problems that may develop along the implementation of a program. The purpose is so that it will enable to produce Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) graduates that have the quality and marketability in tandem with current technological advancement and they can emerge as successful entrepreneurs. In addition, they are the future labour force that will serve as the backbone of the country’s high-income economic development.
