Impact of Sultan Azlan Shah Campus (KSAS)on Local Socio-economic Development: Some Findings

Abstract

The establishments of higher education institutions are often considered to be beneficial to the communities and its regional vicinity. However, the impacts will depend on the scale and size of the universities and the region’s socio-economic patterns. This article identifies the socio-economic impacts arising from the establishment of the Sultan Azlan Shah Campus (KSAS), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). The results from household survey indicated an increase in the economic status of the population especially in terms of business opportunities and property values. KSAS has become a catalyst for the implementation of a number of residential and commercial projects. These findings can be used as guidelines for development planning within the same area in the future so that some negative effects that may arise from the development can be well handled.
