The Contextualisation of Islam in the Main Stream of Indonesia and Malaysia: The Perception on Moderation, Secularism and Extremism in the Process of Independence

This article discusses the contextualisation of Islam in relations to the perspectives of moderation, secularism andextremism that had been realised in the process of Independence of Indonesia and Malaysia. The main question here refers to the image of Islam in these two nations that promote the concept and orientation of moderation and reject the idea of extremism.However under the same circumstance, these two terms are overshadowed by secularism that separates religion from political and governmental affairs, which is perceived as universal. This idea is actually closely related to the process of independence dominated by the nationalists who tend to pursue the establishment of the nation-states derived from the West. The framework of the discussion is confirmed to qualitative approach in accordance with history of ideas based on the analysis on the historical development in reference to selected primary sources and interpretation derived from secondary writings.
