Abstract

The writing of this social science was conducted to explore the knowledge, skills and practices of acting method as coaching programs in education, especially teacher as coach at Malaysian Arts School (SSeM).  This is conducted through researching the understanding of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) by Shulman (1986) with the Secondary School Standard Curriculum (KSSM), Malaysian Arts School (SSeM) 2017 in the implementation of Theater Arts teaching. In addition, the objectives of this study is to idenify the knowledge and explore skills and practices of coaches on the use of acting techniques in depth through the figure of Theater Arts from Stanilavky (1946). To create a context for teacher identity development, a coaching approach is designed in parallel with a model based on influential acting method in Theater Arts. This model, namely BEING (Believe, Experiment, Invent, Navigate, Generate) by Özmen (2011). The background of the study based on the knowledge and understanding of the coaches about KSSM still does not achieve the content of the curriculum because the coaches are not specializing in the field. Planning, preparation of lesson plans and implementation of teaching activities are less focused on the pedagogy and practice of teaching activities referring to standards or content outcomes. The design of this study is qualitative based on exploration and a case study strategy. A sample of five coaches were selected as participants who did not have any background in specialization and professional qualifications in theater-specific performing arts studies as well as basic knowledge and existing skills only through experience itselfs. Data collection was done through interview, observation and content analysis of KSSM SSeM Seni Teater document. The important of this study also proposes the concept of professional identity development of teachers in understanding transformation in the teaching and preparation of guidelines and references for theater and drama programs in the field of Malaysia education professionals of the Ministry of Education Malaysia (MOE).
