Small Town in Transitions: Some Evidence from Tanjong Malim, Perak

Abstract

This paper analyzes the changes in Tanjong Malim. This is because of the globalization process has increase the area of the development and affected the transformation of space in certain small towns. Tanjong Malim is a small town located in the southern state of Perak and northern of Selangor. It aims to be Sub Regional Centre of Perak in 2020. But due to its location which is quite far from Kinta Metropolitan Region and also located outside of main national corridor, its raises the question. Does Tanjong Malim capable to change. By using secondary data such as population and housing census data, Batang Padang District Local Plan and 370 questionaire of heads of households. The analysis found that (i) the trend of population growth in the study area is increasing, (ii) Tanjong Malim occupy the highest hierarchy compared to other small towns in the same area, and (iii) a decline of function and role Tanjong Malim as a traditional small town. These changes are early indicators shows that Tanjong Malim is going through a transformation process and it is a positive indication for the realization Tanjong Malim to reach the hierarchy as a Sub Regional Centre for Perak in 2020.
