Abstract

Scissoring skills support writing skills and other bilateral motor skills. Therefore, this study was conducted to develop children’s scissoring skills by using demonstration method in the Teaching and Learning (T&L) of physical development and aesthetics strand. In addition, this study also aimed to identify the implication of demonstration method in the T&L process. This study is a qualitative study that employs an action research design. This study involved a 5-years-old class from a private kindergarten in Bukit Beruntung, Selangor. Two children who have problems in using scissors were selected as the research participants. The data were collected from checklists, field notes, photos and interview, which was then analyzed according to themes. The data analysis revealed that Participant 2, who is a boy has developed the aspects of cutting skills namely scissor grip and cutting motion, while Participant 1, a girl was still weak because of lacking self-confidence. Besides, the findings revealed that the demonstration method increased the understanding and interests of 5-years-old children, other than the two participants, thus smoothen the T&L process. In conclusion, the application of demonstration method in physical and aesthetic activities improved the children’s scissoring skills, interests and also their understanding, but the effects were not overall. The implication of this study is that the demonstration method should be applied in the T&L of physical development and aesthetics strand, other than scissoring, specifically those involving bilateral motor skills, however, needs to be integrated with positive reinforcement.
