Abstract

Organic chemistry is often considered a difficult and challenging subject to master. This study aimed to examine the relationship between the attitude and interest of chemistry trainee teachers and the achievements in the Organic Chemistry I and Organic Chemistry II courses at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). This correlation review involved 123 chemistry trainer teachers in the fifth and seventh semesters. Data was collected using questionnaires that measured attitudes and interest in Organic Chemistry. Descriptive analysis showed that students had a positive attitude (mean=4.01, SP=0.90) and high interest (mean=3.95; SP=0.95) against this course. However, the Spearman-rho correlation showed a very weak and insignificant relationship between attitudes and achievements in Organic Chemistry I (rs=0.148, p>0.05) and Organic Chemistry II (rs=0.001, p>0.05). Meanwhile, the relationship between interest and achievement in Organic Chemistry I (rs=0.098, p>0.05) and Organic Chemistry II (rs =0.006, p>0.05) was also not significant. These findings show that although students have a high affective predisposition to Organic Chemistry, the factor does not have a direct impact on academic achievement. This study can be used as a reference for lecturers to form appropriate teaching approaches to provide better learning experiences and academic achievements.
