Budi-Islam is the core pillar in the formation of Malay identity and its community. From the survey of past studies it indicates that budi-Islam plays the main role in moulding the thinking, action and behaviour of the Malay community. The emergence of budi can be said to happen naturally and its presence is strengthened through the practice of Malay social norms known as adat and its environment which can be philosophically understood as the spirit of paddy. The position of budi is further strengthened with the support of Islam whereby both share the same objectives. The interaction between Islam and budi has generated several social norms such as tolerance, respecting each other, cooperation, considerate, forgiveness, shyness and patience. Through civilizational perspective, the understanding on the position of budi-Islam as the core pillar in the formation of Malay identity can be dug out by analyzing the community social-cultural, social-economy and dissecting several forms of idiomatic expressions and proverbs like the peribahasa, pepatah and bahasa kiasan. To understand the role of budi-Islam in moulding the community behavior one can study how the community interacts among themselves and with non Malay communities since the kingdom of Malay-Hindu Srivijaya and then the kingdom of Malay-Islam Malacca till today.
