Economic activities in Kelantan, 1950s till 1970s

Abstract

This article discusses the economic activities of Kelantan in the 1950s till 1970s. Subsistence agriculture is the main economic activity in Kelantan before 1950. Features of agricultural and rural areas remained until the beginning of the postindependence. This underscores the uniqueness of the individual to the state, especially in the socio-cultural influences society. After 1950 the situation has not changed much. The average Malays in Kelantan live in rural areas where agriculture is still the main livelihood. Only a small number live in the city and engaged in the field of business, labor and government service positions. A subsistence economy to a certain extent has inhibited the government’s efforts to develop the state. High migration rates and poverty among its people reflect the reality of the economic situation and the actual situation during the period.
