Abstract

The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) has been implemented as a mandatory procedure since 1988 in order to achieve a sustainable development. The number of quarry activities is the highest among 19 activities listed in the EIA report to the Department of Environment (DOE). Quarrying activities had various implications on the environmental ecology system. The discussion in this paper is based on the EIA reports regarding quarrying activities in Labu, Negeri Sembilan. Those reports were review based on the ecological input which was used to determine the adequacy and compliance of EIA procedures. The review was done based on 12 criteria related to ecological aspects. A close scrutiny on those EIA reports suggests that it has insufficient information on ecological input as well as procedures regarding EIA. The findings in this study are crucial in order to ensure that EIA reports follow strictly required procedures. It also suggests that the input on ecology is vital to minimize the effects of quarrying activities on the environment.
