Innovation in the Management of Zakat in UPSI: Its Effect on Recipients’ Satisfaction Among Students

Zakat management needs to keep pace with the development of other sectors of management in the country. Nowadays, the changes that occurred in the management sector demand zakat institutions to be more creative and innovative in facing these changes for the purpose of gaining the confidence of zakat payers and recipients. The zakat management innovation introduced in Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris has shown positive effects in terms of collection and efficiency in the management of zakat, and at the same time has also received recognition from various parties. However, the effectiveness of this innovation has yet to be known in terms of recipients’ satisfaction among students. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of the innovation that has been implemented in the management of zakat in UPSI. A total of 105 UPSI undergraduates were chosen as respondents of this study. The results of this study showed an increase in the level of satisfaction of zakat recipients among students compared to the level of satisfaction of zakat recipients from state zakat institutions. An important implication of the study is that the zakat management innovation introduced in UPSI has the potential to be extended to other higher education institutions and zakat institutions of state Islamic religious councils.
