The religious dimension in Naguib Mahfouz’s Novels: An Analytical study of selected characters

Abstract

يُعَدُّ نجيب محفوظ من أبرز الأدباء العرب والعالميين، حيث أثرى الأدب العربي برواياته التي تناولت قضايا إنسانية واجتماعية عميقة، مما أكسبه مكانة أدبية استثنائية تُوِّجَت بفوزه بجائزة نوبل في الأدب عام 1988م، إلا أن البعد الديني في أدبه ظل محط جدل واسع بين النقاد، حيث رأى البعض أنه يميل إلى العلمانية، في حين أكد آخرون على التفاعل العميق مع القيم الأخلاقية والروحانية في نصوصه. تتمثل مشكلة هذا البحث في التباين الواضح في الآراء النقدية حول معالجة محفوظ للبعد الديني، إذ تنقسم الدراسات بين من يرى فيه رمزًا للمادية، ومن يرى أن نصوصه تعكس صراعًا روحيًا إنسانيًا. ومن هنا، تنبثق أهمية البحث؛ حيث يسعى إلى سد هذه الفجوة من خلال تحليل نصوص مختارة تكشف عن الرموز الروحية وتجلياتها الأدبية، وربطها بالسياق الثقافي والاجتماعي الذي أُنتجت فيه. هذا، ويهدف البحث إلى استكشاف القيم الدينية والروحانية في روايات نجيب محفوظ، وتسليط الضوء على التفاعل بين الإيمان والمادية في شخصياته وأحداثه. كما يسعى لتصحيح التصورات الخاطئة التي تُحيط برؤيته المادية المفترضة، عبر منهج وصفي تحليلي يركز على وصف الشخصيات والرموز وتحليلها، ووضعها في سياقها الاجتماعي والثقافي لفهم تأثير البيئة المحيطة على رؤيته الروحية. وقد توصل البحث إلى أن محفوظ نجح في دمج القيم الدينية والصراعات الروحية في حياة شخصياته، مما يعكس عمقًا فكريًا وروحيًا يتجاوز السطحية المادية، وأنه استخدم رواياته لتقديم تساؤلات فلسفية حول الإيمان والمادية دون الانحياز لوجهة نظر محددة، مما يُثري تجربة القارئ الفكرية والنقدية. تُسهم الدراسة في تعميق النقاش حول البعد الديني في الأدب العربي الحديث، وتفتح آفاقًا لدراسات مستقبلية.

Naguib Mahfouz stands as one of the most prominent Arab and international literary figures, enriching Arabic literature with his novels that delve into profound human and social issues. His exceptional literary stature culminated in being awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1988. However, the religious dimension in his works has been a subject of significant controversy among critics. While some perceive him as leaning towards secularism, others emphasize his deep engagement with moral and spiritual values in his texts. This study addresses the evident disparity in critical perspectives regarding Mahfouz's treatment of the religious dimension. Some studies depict him as a symbol of materialism, while others interpret his texts as reflecting a profound human spiritual struggle. This research emerges to bridge this gap by analyzing selected texts to uncover spiritual symbols and their literary manifestations, linking them to the cultural and social context in which they were produced. The study aims to explore the religious and spiritual values in Naguib Mahfouz's novels and to highlight the interaction between faith and materialism in his characters and narratives. It also seeks to correct misconceptions surrounding his presumed materialist outlook by employing a descriptive-analytical methodology. This approach focuses on character and symbol description and analysis, situating them within their social and cultural contexts to understand how the surrounding environment shaped his spiritual vision. The study concludes that Mahfouz successfully integrated religious values and spiritual conflicts into his characters’ lives, reflecting intellectual and spiritual depth that transcends superficial materialism. His novels serve as a platform for philosophical inquiries into faith and materialism without adhering to a specific viewpoint, enriching the reader’s intellectual and critical experience. This research contributes to deepening the discussion on the spiritual dimension in modern Arabic literature and opens avenues for future studies.
