The usage of technology in solid waste management is growing, particularly in developed countries such as Japan and United States. However, not all countries have the capacity to apply modern methods of solid waste disposal. This includes developing nation such as Malaysia. This matter has led to the existence of more open landfill (open dumping) to accommodate the increasing number of waste. A study conducted at Kayu Madang landfill Kota Kinabalu is to identify the components of sustainable landfill management and the contribution of these elements in the effort to achieve the sustainable landfill and the impact to environment. Therefore, this study will utilize the collected data through questionnaire to household and scavengers, interviews with key officials at City Hall of Kota Kinabalu (CHKK), secondary data from CHKK and recyclable center. The study found the element of sustainable landfill management exists in this area but on a very minimal level. This refers to the recycle activities which were done by many parties, namely household, collection center and scavengers. Efforts should be intensified in order to create a combination of waste management component that can attain towards sustainable landfill management and can prolong the lifespan of the landfill.
