The Ability to Own a House among Urban Families in Malaysia

Cities are often seen as a focus and suitable habitat for living a good quality of life. Good quality of city or urban life is not only measured through the facilities and infrastructure available, but also involves the ability to own a house among the families in the city. This is because a house is a basic need which is a key indicator in assessing the level of capability and the life quality of the population and the families in the city. However, rapid development in the current urban environment has directly affected families in the city to own their own homes. Although the government has implemented various efforts to raise the level of home ownership among the people in the country, housing issues are still debated by many concerned parties. The increase in prices for all types of houses from 2010 to March 2015 is reported to have exceeded 30 percent. This is feared to cause the existence of a new group of urban poor. Based on the literature review, there are some housing issues among urban families in Malaysia especially the poor and the low and middle income households in owning their own homes. The review of the writings and research findings reveals the issue of owning a house is affiliated with household income factors, household spending and housing financing facilities. While the rising cost of living, the rise in the price of building materials and land in the city has resulted in the issue of the ability to own a house becomes more complex. This article argues that the ability of a family in the city to own a home is influenced by multidimensional factors and has an impact on the well-being of the family as well as contributing to the emergence of a new urban poor.
