Abstract

This study was to analyze the teaching of mathematics to the application of cognitive in KSSR in a primary school through Hermeneutic Method. The study involved six teachers who teach Mathematics KSSR in a primary school located in Sungai Siput (U), Kuala Kangsar. The sample used for this study is based on questionnaires that were distributed to them. The study found that there are three main problems faced by the students, which are, difficulty in understanding mathematical concepts, difficulty in remembering mathematical terms or keywords, and in mathematical problem solving. Teachers also faced three major problems in teaching mathematics, namely, less mathematical reference materials in Tamil, inexperienced teachers or teacher are not from Mathematics option and the teaching and learning time for Mathematics is not enough. The study also shows three important methods that can be used by teachers while teaching Mathematics KSSR to improve cognitive skills, which are, discovery learning, cooperative learning and constructivism learning. This study has implications on the Education Department in providing Mathematical reference materials in Tamil, to train teachers to be more experienced and to analyze the teaching and learning time for Mathematics.
