Abstract

This article examines the extent of WiFi coverage in the Sultan Azlan Shah Campus (KSAS), Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI). The UPSI-JARING broadband internet services is provided through wireless network at the main campus, residential colleges, and around the KSAS. This article attempts to investigate the UPSI student views on WiFi coverage in KSAS in which the WiFi access are included in their tuition fees for every semester. The access is very important to the students to get information, preparing assignments and allow them to be connected to the cyber world but some student feels that it is an imperative need. Survey questionnaires were distributed randomly to 300 respondents in April 2013. A total of 20 different locations and stations have been identified for WiFi coverage sites, such as academic blocks, UPSI main hall, cafes, mosques, lecture halls, Islamic Centre, Experimental Stage, Curriculum Centre, Student Centre, ICT Centre and Centre for Children Development. The questionnaires were analysed using for descriptive statistics and at the same time the t-test was used to test the hypothesis whether there is a common view of students at each location. The results showed that the majority of UPSI student is not satisfied with WiFi coverage in the KSAS. On average, 84 percent are dissatisfied with the level of WiFi coverage in the KSAS, but the test showed that there was a common view of all monitoring stations. The implications of these problems cause the students to access the internet is low and difficult for them to access information and to communicate with others.
