Transformational Leadership of Vocational College Directors and Self-Efficacy of Vocational College Lecturers

Abstract

The success of the transformation of vocational education, as recently launched by theMalaysian government in 2014, depends highly on the directors’ leadership roles and theperformance of the teaching staff of newly-upgraded vocational colleges. In light of thecurrent scenario, this study was intended to uncover transformational leadership of directorsof vocational colleges and self-efficacy of vocational lecturers. This study was also aimedat examining the influence of directors’ transformational leadership toward lecturers’ selfefficacy.Samples consisting of 152 lecturers were randomly selected from seven colleges in the states of Negeri Sembilan and Malacca. The survey questionnaires consisted of twoinstruments, Multifactor-Leadership Questionnaire (MLQ) and Teacher Sense of EfficacyScale (TSES) measuring transformational leadership and self-efficacy, respectively. Dataanalysis involved frequency,percentage, mean, t-test, ANOVA and multiple regression.The study showed that the level of vocational college directors’transformational leadershipas perceived by vocational lecturers was moderate, while lecturers’ self-efficacy was high.The transformational leadership of vocational directors of different gender did not showsignificant difference. This study also revealed that 39% of the variance in directors’transformational leadership could be explained by lecturers’ self-efficacy. These findingsimplied that the college directors should exhibit transformational leadership more stronglyas it exerts influence toward college lecturers’ self-efficacy.
