Keywords:
recreational lake, heavy metals, lake water qualityAbstract
This article will discuss about the concentration level of heavy metals in the recreational lake involving direct contact between water with people. It involves seven heavy metals such as zinc, iron, cadmium, magnesium, mercury, lead and copper. Water samples were collected from 22 stations from four pools at Taiping Lake Gardens. Primary data was used which involves observations of water samples in the field. Assessment of heavy metals concentration levels are based on the classification of the Water Quality Index from Department of Environment and Drinking Water Quality Standards from Ministry of Health Malaysia. Overall, the test results showed that the concentrations of heavy metals were below the standards that set by the Ministry of Health Malaysia and the Department of Environment except lead. There is also the concentration of heavy metals that exceed the standard at the time of observation with maxima value such as ferum (1.218 mg / l) and lead (1.075 mg / l). Taiping Lake Gardens is now becoming a tourist attraction because of water recreational activities. With these findings, hopefully it can help the Taiping Municipal Council to draw up water recreation activities at Taman Tasik Taiping with minimum risk.
