Abstract
Problem solving skills are essential ability in all stages of age to making able problem solving in numerous circumstances in daily lives neither in education nor profession. In problem solving skills requirement context, students are required to have these skills connected to the process of cognitive and metacognitive such as reasoning, comprehension, information gathering, analysis, solution making, decision making, planning, reviewing, and evaluating. Hence, this study aims to examine the effect of using TRIZ methodology as a problem solving method towards problem solving skills among computing students. Other than that, this study also includes the different effects of TRIZ usage towards problem solving skills with different levels of innovative personalities among computing students. Quasi-experimental approach together with text analysis has been applied. A total of 41 computing students involved in this study. Instruments used in this study consist of a questionnaire Computational Thinking Scale, Problem Solving Inventory, Personal Innovativeness in the Domain of Information Technology, and a survey form on TRIZ problem solving methodology. Data were analysed using pre-test and post-test analysis for questionnaire and thematic analysis for text analysis. The findings indicate that TRIZ methodology has been proven to help problem solving skills among students in information technology and computer science. In conclusion, it is clearly proven that the TRIZ methodology has the potential to improve problem solving skills among computing students.
