Abstract

Since its establishment in 1915, the Council of Islamic Religion and Malay Kelantan Custom or known as Majlis Agama Islam dan Adat Istiadat Melayu Kelantan (MAIK) has been responsible for administering various aspects of the Muslim community in Kelantan, including the social-related problems. Among the social issues that need to be addressed by MAIK is the problem of sexual misconduct including prostitution, khalwat and cohabitation in Muslim community. Those social problems which most probably arise from the current ever changing situation occured in Kelantan eventually became one of the trigger factors of MAIK. Consequently, MAIK has to face many challenges in addressing such problems from getting worse. Therefore, this article discusses the challenges faced by MAIK in tackling social problems among Muslim community in Kelantan.
