Abstract

This paper discussed part of the findings in a case study conducted with student teachers who were in a teacher education programme in a selected university. The discussion focused on the findings of interviews regarding their readiness for their teaching practice or practicum at schools where there were placed. Open ended interviews were conducted on randomly selected students (n=10) who had visited their schools for their social visit before their actual teaching practice. Audio data were collected from the participants during the interviews. The data were analysed and categorised thematically. Main themes that emerged regarding readiness included social readiness, psychological readiness, general pedagogical knowledge readiness, pedagogical content knowledge readiness and basic skills readiness. The findings showed that the student teachers were confident that they were ready socially and psychologically for their teaching practices. They also had readiness on the aspects of general pedagogical knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge and basics skills that would be required as teachers. These findings could possible be connected as to why most of the student teachers scored well in their teaching practice achievement score. Therefore further study should also be conducted to acquire a clearer picture for the improvement of teacher education, specifically during their teaching practices.
