Development of a Pedagogical Framework Integration of Science and Mathematics in Physical Education and Health Education

Malaysia needs skilled manpower in fields related to Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics. An innovative approach is designed to integrate the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics in Physical Education and Health Education. To develop a pedagogical framework integration of Science and Mathematics in Physical Education and Health. Qualitative data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analysed thematically using NVivo software. Curriculum and pedagogy experts consisting of Curriculum Development Division officers and three expert teachers teaching the three subjects were invited to discuss and provide input on the hybrid framework. The integrated pedagogical model of Science and Mathematics in PE has been formed contains four elements such as Element of Curriculum, Teaching and Facilitation Strategies, Challenges and Constraints and Assessment. There are 10 topics that are aligned where four topics are form one, three topics are form two and form three. This pedagogical framework will not only enrich the students’ knowledge but elevates the level of professionalism of the PE teacher as well. This innovative approach can encourage teachers integrate other subjects and subsequently achieve the objectives of the Cross-Element Curriculum stated in the Malaysian Education Standards.
