Beauty Concept in Traditional Malay Literature

Abstract

Makalah ini bertujuan membincangkan konsep keindahan dalam kesusasteraan Melayu tradisional berasaskan gagasan estetika yang dikemukakan oleh Muhammad Haji Salleh dan idea estetika oleh I.V. Braginsky. Analisis ini adalah sebuah analisis kepustakaan dan perbincangan dibuat secara deskriptif berdasarkan dua teks utama iaitu Puitika Sastera Melayu (2000) karya Muhammad Haji Salleh dan buku Erti keindahan dan Keindahan Erti (1994) oleh Braginsky. Hasil analisis menunjukkan terdapat tiga perbezaan ketara dalam mengkonsepsikan keindahan dalam kesusasteraan Melayu tradisional oleh dua tokoh ini iaitu sumber keindahan, dasar keindahan dan cara mengkonsepsi keindahan. Perbezaan ini berpunca daripada perbezaan pendekatan. Braginsky bersandar kepada idea struktural Yury Tynyanov lebih mementingkan aspek deksripsi tekstual yang dihubungkan dengan sokongan sumber Islam, manakala Muhammad Haji Salleh juga bersandar deskripsi tekstual tetapi tidak bersandarkan kepada sokongan sumber agama Islam. Analisis juga menunjukkan dua buah gagasan idea ini menjadi asas akademik untuk memahami makna keindahan dalam kesusasteraan Melayu dengan dua perspektif yang berbeza.

The article aims to discuss the concept of beauty in traditional Malay literature based on the viewpoints of the two scholars are proposed by Muhammad Haji Salleh and I.V.Braginsky. This is a descriptive analysis which based on the texts of Puitika Sastera Melayu (2000) by Muhammad Haji Salleh and Erti keindahan dan keindahan erti (1994) by Braginsky. The result showed that there are three main apparent differences in the conception of beauty in Malay traditional literature. The three basic differences are the source of beauty, the foundation of beauty and how beauty is conceptualized. The differences occurred because of the different on methodology. Braginsky stood on the ideas of Yury Tynyanov emphasize more on the textual description and relate to the Islamic recourses, meanwhile Muhammad Haji Salleh also emphasize on textual description but has not relate to the Islamic recourses. This analysis also showed that these two conceptual ideas become an academic base in order to understand the meaning of beautiful in the Malay literature through the different perspectives.
