Fokus kajian ini ialah menyiasat keberkesanan pendekatan pengajaran Bahasa Melayu secara autentik terhadap penulisan karangan pelajar. Pendekatan autentik yang digunakan dalam kajian ini disandarkan model pengajaran dan pembelajaran autentik Zemelmen dan rakan-rakan (2005). Kajian kuasi eksperimen yang melibatkan dua kelas Tingkatan Dua yang setara, iaitu kumpulan kawalan dan kumpulan eksperimen digunakan. Kumpulan kawalan menjalani aktiviti PdP karangan secara konvensional, manakala kumpulan rawatan mengikuti aktiviti PdP melalui pendekatan autentik. Ujian pra, ujian pasca, dan soal selidik digunakan. Ujian pra dan ujian pasca dijalankan bagi mendapatkan data tentang keberkesanan pendekatan autentik meningkatkan skor karangan pelajar. Dapatan kajian mendapati gred karangan pelajar dapat ditingkatkan setelah mengikuti pendekatan autentik ini. Dapatan kajian juga mendapati pendekatan ini dapat meningkat skor min karangan dalam ujian pasca secara signifikan. Dapatan kajian turut menunjukkan bahawa skor min dalam ujian pasca bagi kumpulan kawalan lebih rendah berbanding dengan skor min dalam ujian yang sama bagi kumpulan rawatan. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan penggunaan bahan, aktiviti dan penilaian autentik dapat meningkatkan tahap karangan pelajar.
The focus of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the authentic approach in essay writing in the teaching of the Malay language. The authentic approach used in this study is based on the Zemelmen et. al. model of authentic teaching and learning (2005). The quasi-experimental design, involves two form two classes of equal ability which were assigned as the control group and the experimental group. The control group underwent conventional essay writing activities, whereas the treatment group followed the authentic approach in the teaching and learning activities. Pre-tests, post-tests, and questionnaires were used. Pretests and post-tests were conducted to obtain data on the effectiveness of the authentic approach to improve students' essay writing scores. The results showed that students’ essays grade were improved after following this authentic approach. The study also found that this approach increased the mean scores in post-test essay significantly. The findings also showed that the mean score in the post-test for the control group was lower than the mean score on the same test for the treatment group. The overall findings showed that use of materials, activities and authentic assessment can improve student writing.
